About the Artist
Ted Orland lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he pursues parallel careers in teaching, writing and photography. Ted first visited Yosemite in 1966 as a student in Ansel Adams’ Summer Photography workshop, and returned to become his assistant and printer of Adams’ Yosemite Special Edition Prints. He taught at Adams’ annual Yosemite Workshop fifteen times, and in 2001 curated the centennial exhibition of Adams’ lifetime achievement in photography at the Yosemite National Park Museum.
In 1987 Ted became the first photographer to receive a National Park Service Artist in Residency in Yosemite, and the following year received the Certificate of Special Recognition from the United States Congress for his work in the conservationist movement to save Mono Lake. He was a participant in the annual National Park Service High Country Artists’ Pack Trip for fifteen years, and remains a frequent visitor to the Park.
Ted Orland is author of Man & Yosemite, which traces the early history of Yosemite interpreted through photographs from that era. A major selection of Ted’s own photographs & writings appear in his monograph, Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity. In non-photographic circles Ted is widely known as co-author (with David Bayles) of the classic artists’ survival guide Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, with a half-million copies in print and nine foreign-language editions.
In his photographic art, Ted Orland engages a wide range of contemporary subject matter while continuing to honor the West Coast tradition of finely craft printmaking. His archival inkjet images encompass traditional media, hand-coloring, infrared and digital processes. His work has been exhibited widely and appears in most major museum collections. He is represented by The Ansel Adams Gallery.
