Details Additional Information
Ansel Adams made this image around 1948 with an 8" x 10" view camera using a 1/2-second exposure. After searching for dogwoods to photograph, he came upon this scene just 600 feet from Mirror Lake Road , but almost didn't set up his camera. He recalls the day in Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs:
"A light rain began to fall, and I considered giving up for the day, but when I came to an opening in the trees and saw this subject open up before me I banished such thoughts of defeat and set up the camera under protection of the focusing cloth. The rain added a certain richness to the scene and suggested an atmospheric recession of values that would not otherwise be seen."
In making the enlargements, Adams had difficulty separating the gray tones and found the process to be largely paper dependent. However, he believed the first contact print made from this negative ranked among the most satisfactory prints he ever made, displaying marvelous color and capturing the luminosity of his subject.
"Tenaya Creek, Dogwood, Rain" appears in Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs and Classic Images, the book based on the Museum Set Collection, a retrospective portfolio of what Adams considered his strongest work. It also appears in Yosemite and the Range of Light (out of print), the Portfolios of Ansel Adams (Portfolio 3), Yosemite and the High Sierra, and Yosemite.

This is my first art acquisition and I am so impressed with the quality of Alan Ross's interpretation of the master's negative.  I have seen original Adam's prints in galleries and this one easily lives up to them but by using modern materials has a wonderful presence and snap.  If simply glows!

My only complaint is that of the framing- the top mat distance is rather short and feels crowded and a bit amateurish; it would be better to have it the same width as the mat top and sides.  I was also surprised at the distance around the print; Ansel always matted with a 1/4" between print and mat with a bit more for the bottom signature strip- my pet peeve as I am an exhibiting photographer and frame my own work.  Otherwise fabulous!

Taken to get a fully accurate version of one of my favorite Adams images. It is a wonderful picture to contemplate and the Gallery shipped it quickly,  well mounted and presented.

This photo is simply amazing. If it's in a low to midium-light area and you look at it from a 45 degree angle, the photo takes on a life of it's own. It looks as though it has a 3-D effect because the lit areas in the photo seem to flow down the creek. It's hard to explain but you won't be disappointed.
