Details Finishing & Additional Information

Ansel Adams made this image around 1947 with an 8" x 10" view camera after a long walk to the site and waiting many hours for the rainbow to appear in the foreground. Waiting around? Examples is much more colorful than waiting around.
Despite the lengthy time to consider his set up, Adams didn't capture it exactly as he wanted, as he writes in Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs :
"I missed on one small detail which ruffled; the right-hand tree of the two little cedars near the center of the image meets a branch from a nearby tree. I should have lowered the camera at least a foot to avoid this merger."
While composing the image, Adams struggled to keep the camera dry in the mist. He recalled that "the sound and fury of the waterfall, the clean air, and driving mist were unforgettable."
Later in answer to critics questioning the artistic merit of the photograph, he responded:
"Some urban aesthetes claim this photograph is just a bit of scenery and is certainly not art. May they and their opinions rest in peace! I think it is a choice bit of Chaos organized into some kind of expressive Order. I do not desire to impose a definition of creativity on anyone."
"Nevada Fall, Rainbow" appeared in "Portfolio III, Yosemite Valley ", published by the Sierra Club in 1960. It also appears in the Portfolios of Ansel Adams, Yosemite and the Range of Light (out of print), Yosemite and the High Sierra, Yosemite, Ansel Adams Monograph (out of print), Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs and Classic Images, the book based on the Museum Set Collection, a retrospective portfolio of what Adams considered his strongest work.

Beautiful rendition August 18, 2017
Reviewer: Joel Kitchens from College Station, TX United States
This picture was purchased as a Yosemite Special Edition.  My only complaint is that I wish Alan Ross would have signed or initialed the print somewhere visible.  That minor quibble out of the way, I must say the image is magnificent!  Ansel was a master of his art and his ability to capture detain at the extreme ends of the tonal range is a marvel. Images on the web and posters do not do justice to an actual Ansel Adams photograph.  The custom framing looks top notch.  Thank you for something I will treasure, as this will be the closest I can come to a true Ansel original. THE ANSEL ADAMS GALLERY -- We are really happy you are pleased with this print. Some people will cut a window in backer to to show Alan's initials and printing/stamp on back. Great description of this print, we are always a little sad that the web image does not do justice to the incredible depth of tones that these Gelatin Silver photographs produce.

Special Memory February 3, 2016
Reviewer: Jodi from San Diego, CA
I am a photographer and got engaged at the base of this waterfall.  To commemorate the occasion we bought this print hours after our engagement. Such a beautiful image tied to an incredible memory, great photographer, and awesome location.
If you are a photographer I recommend buying in person as each print is slightly different due to being done by hand.  I was able to select one that had more light in the foreground where another print appeared to have burned in a bit more and consequently, showed less detail. I love the signature matte - makes it feel that much more special.

Amazing Composition, Lighting and Detail June 10, 2015
Reviewer: NurseTerriLynn from Palmdale, CA
I'm a amateur and not qualified to critique his work, but since you have this review section, I will.  Seeing it close up, there is nothing I would change.  It is perfection.  I am blessed to have an authorized print....
