Tom Killion will instruct a small group of students in a one-week workshop covering the design, carving and printing of Japanese-style multi-block woodcut prints. The class will begin with an overview of Japanese-style wood block printmaking, then move to an afternoon of outdoor sketching from nature in Yosemite Valley. We'll transfer our sketch images onto the first "key" block and carve it so we can then transfer this image onto multiple color blocks.

Tom Killion
will instruct a small group of students in a one-week workshop covering the design, carving and printing of Japanese-style multi-block woodcut prints. The class will begin with an overview of Japanese-style wood block printmaking, then move to an afternoon of outdoor sketching from nature in Yosemite Valley. We'll transfer our sketch images onto the first "key" block and carve it so we can then transfer this image onto multiple color blocks. Along the way Killion will provide instruction on planning blocks for accurate registration, and all-important carving and tool sharpening techniques. Once the blocks are carved we will spend at least one full day printing our images by hand with traditional Japanese water-based inks and brushes. Students will learn how to dampen paper and mix inks, as well as how to produce accurate color registration. Woodblocks, inks and paper, along with all ancillary supplies needed for carving and hand printing, will be provided for a materials fee of $75. Other than some large clearing gouges and chisels that Killion will provide, students must bring their own tools: upon registration they will receive a list of tools to buy and where to obtain them. This class requires some artistic ability and manual dexterity, it is not for complete artistic novices; students with a little experience in some form of printmaking will probably benefit more from the instruction, but it is not absolutely necessary. The technique Tom teaches can be practiced at home, as it requires only a table and nearby sink.
