“Boulders and Bands of Ice” was made just last winter in Yosemite Valley during an extended period of sub-freezing temperatures that began during my Winter Light Workshop, and thankfully, a few days beyond. As the Merced River freezes, the water flow slows and the resulting ice formations trace the gradual water level decline with bands that resemble those of topographic maps.
Sinuous lines have been proven to be one of the most intriguing shapes to the human psyche. Combine those already interesting patterns with the many circles, another powerful shape, and it is difficult to resist exploring every bit of this frame.
