Sugar Pines and Autumn Dogwood
If one refers to contrast in a photograph, light is usually the first thing that comes to mind. In the landscape I'm always looking for contrast, and the contrast between the light and the dark is just one pairing among endless choices. Hard and soft, smooth and rough, high and low, there's no lack of subjects in nature to tell and contrast visual stories. In this scene I couldn't resist the interplay between the thick, heavy trunks of the Sugar Pines, and the delicate and airy dogwood branches and leaves of magenta and green. The dark, solemn trunks seem to stand guard over their playful autumn pals of the forest, like parents watching their kids play in the park.
