When do you want your Guiding?*:

NOTE: The gallery does not provide transportation during guided sessions. Usually, the staff photographer rides along with you in your vehicle. If you don't have room, you can follow him/her behind their car. If you don't have transportation, a walking guided session can be designed for you.
Attendees under the age of 18 need to have a parent or legal guardian present at the beginning of each class to sign a waiver of liability form.
  • We do not a break full day session into two 1/2-day sessions on separate days. Full-day sessions must be done on the same day. Please choose two 1/2-day sessions if you are wanting 4-hour sessions on different days. Please note: There is a substantial break in tuition for full day ($550 for 1-2 people) versus two half-day sessions ($750 for 1-2 people). You are not guaranteed the same staff photographer for both sessions if choosing two, 1/2-day sessions. For questions and to inquire about arranging a guided session, please email photoguide@anseladams.com or call (209) 372-4413.
  • A private guiding session with one of our gallery staff photographers in Yosemite National Park will allow you to learn about and photograph a selection of the prime locations within Yosemite National Park. From famous vistas of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley, to more intimate locations throughout the park, our staff photographers will lead you to areas to capture unique images and make the most of your photographic experience.
  • While in the field, our photographers can assist you with questions on composition, lighting (Basic Guide), and exposure and camera settings (Custom Guide), however these sessions are ultimately designed to allow you to take advantage of our photographer's intimate knowledge of the topography of Yosemite National Park and the Eastern Sierra.

Sessions are typically set up around the best lighting for photography Yosemite has to offer - sunrise and/or sunset - so start times vary. You will be notified regarding start times and starting locations after signing up for your session.

Custom Guiding Sessions:

Photography Session with Learning your Digital Camera – Choosing this type of session not only gets you to great locations in Yosemite, but the staff photographer guiding you can also teach you how to use your digital SLR camera. While standing in front of beautiful scenes, you can learn some or all of the following:
  • Proper Exposure using the histogram – both in playback and in Live View
  • Accurate focusing technique
  • Learning aperture for depth of field. Understand how Ansel got sharp images from foreground to background!
  • Using shutter speed for fun effects, like slow-shutter water photos.
  • Use of different modes (Aperture and Shutter Priority, Manual)
Photography Session with Digital Darkroom – With this session, you can have an outdoor session, as well as some time learning Lightroom and Photoshop in our digital darkroom – Ansel’s Yosemite darkroom! Darkroom time is subject to availability. Please call 209-372-4413 for availability before purchase. Here are some of the digital techniques you can learn:
  • How to photograph in the field for optimal use of the digital darkroom
  • Efficient workflow in Lightroom and/or Photoshop
  • Using Layers in Photoshop for Landscape Photography
  • When to combine Lightroom and Photoshop techniques for one photograph
  • How to organize your photos using Lightroom’s Library Module
Nighttime Photography Session - Nighttime photography is becoming a popular way to photograph Yosemite's landscape. Many of the techniques used to create a final night photograph can be advanced, such as assembling several separate images into one using layers in Photoshop©. We do have staff who understand the image capture and post-processing techniques used in modern night photography. Here are some of the techniques you can learn during a Nighttime Photography Session:
  • How to use Apps such as The Photographer’s Ephemeris© and Star Walk© to line up night sky objects like the Milky Way and Moon with landscape features like Half Dome.
  • Specific photo equipment for night photography
  • Obtaining correct night exposures
  • How to obtain sharp focus at night
  • Taking multiple exposures to assemble in Lightroom/Photoshop©
  • New Moon vs. Full Moon night photography
A Note on "Tagging Along": For two main reasons, we do not allow family members/significant others/friends to tag along with paying participants. 1. Signing up for any of our guiding services pays for our expert guides to take you to many exclusive spots in Yosemite and/or being at prime locations at the best lighting for photography - regardless of participation. 2. All members of a guiding party need to be paying participants and sign our Acknowledgement of Risk form.

Cancellation Policy: If a participant needs to withdraw from a class, he/she must inform the Gallery no later than 1 day prior to the scheduled class. We will then refund your payment. Full refunds cannot be made for withdrawals initiated within 4 hours of the start of the class. Refunds cannot be made for participant no-shows. Class and guiding payments are transferable to another individual should you choose to withdraw your registration. The above policy only applies to our 4 hour photography classes and guiding services.

The Ansel Adams Gallery is an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service.

Christine is an amazing guide! Her love for nature is infectious! She is also very open to share photography tips! I would totally recommend her for one to one trips!

There is a few ways to improve the site:

1. Give a description of the different photographers.
2. Allow customers to choose guides for smaller groups.
3. Give a better description for the one to one tour.
4. Provide better a better transport system

Another day, another session December 28, 2017
Reviewer: Lesley from Plymouth, England
Originally booked a morning session in Sept for a sunrise at Yosemite but Mike contacted me beforehand and suggested we change it to an afternoon. I am very glad he did as the morning would have been a disaster. The fires in the park meant that the valley was full of thick smoke first thing and would have been a photographer's nightmare for a sunrise session. The afternoon session was fabulous and Mike took me to places in the Valley I would never have found myself. We were away from the crowds and although the weather wasn't optimum for photography, I still managed to get some very nice images and had a fun time.  Mike is a good photographer and his eye and style were similar to my own. If you are keen on photography and only staying a few days in Yosemite it is worth the money to get images that are off the beaten track as Mike knows the area intimately and where to go to maximise your Ansell Adams experience.  Thank you Mike for a great time.

Night photography December 28, 2017
Reviewer: Lesley from Plymouth, England
I had booked a night photography session as I wanted to get pictures of the Milky Way and didn't want to be on my own in unknown territory. Kirk was my guide for this session and we had a fabulous time. We went outside the valley to a lake where I managed to get the stars reflected in the water which was beyond my wildest dreams. Kirk is a good teacher and knows this area like the back of his hand. He is knowledgable and took me to the best places at the best times to maximise the opportunities presented to us. Thank you for a wonderful session.

Disappointed by bad communication December 12, 2017
Reviewer: Pat Nuls
I was disappointed to book a session, only to get a call back saying the time I had BOOKED was unavailable. By that time, it was too late to book anything else.

I loved it! September 26, 2017
Reviewer: Phyllis Dallas from Roseville, CA United States
I'd wanted to do this for some time and decided to splurge for my 60th birthday.  Michael was absolutely wonderful.  He took me to locations that I would not have found on my own, based upon my expressed interests.  He let me set the pace and gave me choices.  Michael also took the time to learn about my camera, so that he was able to help me get the most out of it.  I could see the difference between the pictures that I took the day before our session and those taken during and after the session.  I'd love to do this again in the future.  Thanks Michael!
