Horsetail Fall in Gold, Yosemite
For quite some time now photographers have been making the annual pilgrimage to Yosemite Valley in late February. The now famous event is the lighting of Horsetail Fall in the early evening, as the last of the suns rays touch the delicate veil of water falling to the right of El Capitan, turning it red or orange or gold depending on it's mood. Where today I'd be shoulder to shoulder with everyone wanting to experience the nightly magic, in 1995 I stood by myself on that quiet, cold and damp evening, and I never thought I'd have anything to shoot as the clouds were hanging so thick against the rock. However, twice I was given a peek, with enough time to get off about five shots during the break in the clouds. Both times the fall was a different color -at first quite red, and then quite gold. The available image is the result of the second fleeting moment I experienced that day. I've only printed this image a relatively few times in the past, as I'd lost track of the film for about ten years, but am excited to reintroduce it to collectors today.
